ANGEL OF INDEPENDENCE

One of the maximum symbols of the Mexico City and of the country, the Angel of the Independence rises majestically in the middle of the Walk of the Reform.

The first stone of this recognized monument, it was placed on January 2, 1902 by Porfirio Díaz. The direction of the project was at the expense of the architect Antonio Rivas Mercado, also author of the Theatre Juárez of Guanajuato's City.

This monument is inspired in a project to produce honoring to the heroes of the independence that was consisting of constructing a socle of stone with a Corinthian column crowned by an angel in full Plaza of the Constitution during the government of Antonio Lopez of Holy Anna. This project could not concentrate, and already by the ends of the 19th century, the architect Antonio Rivas Mercado, took again it inspiring in addition by some famous columns of the world as that of Trajano by Rome, that of the Plaza Vendome of Paris and Alejandro by San Petesburgo. All these columns were raised to commemorate, the victory of the ideal one in his respective countries.
It was so this architect designed a circular socle on which a cubic base would rest whose vertexes, the statues rest sedentes that represent the Peace, the Law, the Justice and the War executed by Enrique Alciati. Inside this base the remains rest of some of the most eminent leaders of the Mexican independence as Michael Hidalgo, Vicente Guerrero and Ignacio Allende between others. This base contains in addition the sculptures of the above mentioned insurgents, as well as a successful well sculpture of a lion guided by a child who represents the domain of the truth and the intelligence over the force. On this base there was raised a Corinthian column of 35 meters of height, worked in The Chiluca's, same quarry that is crowned by the famous winged victory, symbol of the victory between the former Greeks.

This monument was inaugurated on September 16, 1910 as culminating event of the holidays of the centenary of the Independence, same which important diplomats attended, ambassadors, civil servants and the village in general to enjoy the pyrotechnic fires, parades and concerts that were realized in the Walk of the Reform in this occasion. Years later, in 1957, the monument to the Independence, known popularly as " The Angel " lived through his more difficult moment on there having be fallen the above mentioned sculpture gilded because of a strong earthquake. Nevertheless, for glory of the city and his inhabitants the sculpture was re-put a little time later and it has resisted since then all the batterings of the nature.

At present, the Angel of the Independence, due to his importance, is together with the Socle, one of two places where the Mexicans meet to feast or to protest, in events that go from political acts and manifestations, up to the feasts for the victorious actions of the Mexican equipment in the world championships of football.
